what i find the most intriguing about this book so far is the vast difference between the Sultan you see with his family, and the Sultan you see in public. When i read about Sultan dealing with the devastation that the constant civil war seemed to bring to his store, i really want to sympathize with him, however when i remind myself about how he treats the women in his family, particularly Sharifa who had no idea about Sonya coming to take her place. it's not fair to her and it's not fair to Sonya. the only happy one was Sultan and he does not deserve it.
so basically, what's most fascinating for me is that you can both love and hate the main character in this book.
